Coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Safety Department including personnel, the safety committees, and safety training. Develop new safety guidelines and regulations, and other safety related programs as necessary to reduce injuries and illness, and to meet legal requirements.
- Assists with implementation and administration of safety and health management system which meets or exceeds requirements of OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star certification.
- Assists with coordinating monthly General Safety Meeting.
- Assists with developing and implementing a contractor safety program to ensure contractors follow all safe work practices expected of AMERICAN employees.
- Under the direction of the Director Safety consults with design, maintenance and operations personnel on safety measures in planning and designing new construction or alterations in buildings or equipment. Participates as the technical expert on safety and occupational health matters during preconstruction meetings. Reviews plans and specifications related to construction, existing buildings, or equipment to determine compliance with safety codes. Negotiates design changes not included in the original plan as needed to eliminate or control safety and occupational health hazards, and comes to agreement on a final plan that incorporates sound safety practices and measures. Provides on-site support related to design and construction problems.
- Works under the direction of the Director Safety to implement emergency action plans and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) program. Responds as a hazardous waste technician in the event of an emergency situation.
- Stays current with regulatory changes and assists with implementing changes as necessary. Under the direction of Director Safety, provides hands on direction and guidance with all departmental managers to ensure full compliance with established corporate policies and procedures, as well as federal, state and local rules and regulations.
- Conducts monthly departmental inspections to identify physical hazards in the workplace as well as unsafe work practices. Must be able to recognize and evaluate industrial hygiene conditions.
- Works under the direction of the Director Safety to perform air and noise monitoring throughout the facility. Works as a liaison with all departments requesting sampling and identifies additional sampling needs that may not be obvious such as products of combustion.
- Works under the direction of the Director Safety to develop and implement written safety programs such as lockouttagout, confined spaces, hazard communication, hearing conservation, etc. This includes written PPE assessments and the annual audit of lockout procedures.
- Assists with the development and implementation of behavior based safety programs in order to reduce and/or eliminate unsafe acts. Works closely with supervision to enforce safe work rules and practices. Identifies unsafe work practices and aids in developing practical solutions. Provides day-to-day direction and guidance with all plant health and safety personnel as well as key individuals in operations. Assists Director Safety in planning work to be accomplished, establishing priorities and schedules work for completion. Renders advice and counsel and gives instructions to employees on technical and administrative matters. Assists in making decisions on work problems presented by subordinates.
- Maintains on-going interface with operations management to address safety and industrial hygiene issues. Participates in the development of all levels of management through supervisor training programs.
- Assists Director Safety to provide quarterly internal audits of each manufacturing department. Documents findings and follows up to ensure abatement.
- Participates in all OSHA inspections as a guide to the officer throughout the facility. Provides OSHA with written documentation as required.
- Assists in the establishment of the safety and occupational health program according to local, state, and federal regulations. Under the direction of Director Safety, develops program policies, procedures, and objectives for accomplishment of the safety and occupational health program. Assists in development and justification of resource requirements.
- Develops and presents safety training programs to meet demands of providing a safe workplace that meets all Federal and State requirements.
- Participates in accident investigations. Follows up on all accident investigations turned in by supervisors and assists them as necessary in determination of the "root cause" and abatement.
- Assists in establishing safety and industrial hygiene performance metrics, measuring performance, analyzing results, and implementing effective controls when necessary.
- Assists with communication of accidents and near-misses to all departments in order to prevent recurrence.
- Assists with maintaining and analyzing OSHA 300 Log in order to reduce frequency rate.
- Promotes a company-wide safety culture by supporting employee engagement safety program.
- Assists with development of methods for providing safety and occupational health support, evaluations, surveys, and studies of an unusual or complex nature requiring liaison with internal and external agencies and organizations.
- Assists Director Safety in representing the company on industry safety committees including, but not limited to, AFS 10-Q, American Society of Safety Engineers, VPPPA Region VII, Committee for Pipe and Tube Imports ad hoc LDLP Safety and Best Practices committee and local section chapters.
- Maintains and audits training records to identify training deficiencies and to document required training has been effectively accomplished.
- Works with Quality Assurance Department to maintain ISO program in Safety Department.
- Acts as Advisor to Safety Committee as needed.
- Enforces safety policies and procedures throughout the facility. This includes implementing progressive discipline policy as required.
- Maintains asbestos program and conducts inspection of buildings for potentially asbestos containing materials. Become certified under EPA guidelines to provide sampling and supervision of asbestos removal projects.
- Works in conjunction with Human Resources and Medical Department to facilitate return to work of employees injured in work-related accidents.
- Works with Medical Department to facilitate medical aspects of silicosis prevention program, lead program, and HAZWOPER program.
- Serves as a resource and liaison for various employee led safety teams and subcommittees.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must exhibit a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in an Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health or other closely related curriculum. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided. Consideration will be given to candidates with other bachelor's degrees, from an accredited four-year college or university, who also have five or more years recent work experience in a safety related field in an industrial environment.
- Must exhibit two or more years experience in Environmental Health and Safety or in Industrial Hygiene related work.
- Must exhibit the ability to learn technical information such as the capability of understanding and implementing federal and state regulations on safety.
- Must exhibit the ability to use measuring instruments such as meters, gas analyzer, tape, etc.
- Must exhibit good management, leadership, and organization skills.
- Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with others.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety and Health or Industrial Hygiene related field.
- Exhibit certification in Environmental Health or Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent (e.g. Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), etc.).
- Exhibit the ability to read and interpret basic blueprints.
- Previous supervisory/leadership experience or training.
