The Fabrication Fitter/Welder sets up, lays out, fits and welds together metal components of products such as pipe, flanges, extensions, and plates; identifies, manually welds, and repairs defects in welded pipe with electric arc-welding equipment.
Follows all safety policies and initiates safety improvements.
- Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
- Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by welding specifications.
- Starts power supply to produce electric current.
- Strikes (forms) arc, manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
- Welds in flat, horizontal, or vertical positions.
- Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
- Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece.
- Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
- Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.
- Identifies areas of pipe that require repair, either pre-marked by inspectors, or through visual inspection.
- Positions pipe on repair rack to facilitate the repair process.
- Performs necessary preparatory work by grinding, preheating, or otherwise preparing pipe for welding.
- Reviews drawings, diagrams, written specifications and instructions to determine fitting and welding requirements.
- Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly, and tack welding.
- Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
- Bolts, clamps, and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding.
- Repairs products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts.
- Level III welder requires minimal, if any supervision in order to carry out the essential functions of the job.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to work 1st or 2nd Shift schedule.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, read and understand pipe drawings, and procedure manuals.
- Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Must be able to speak effectively with supervisors and other employees.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Must be able to accurately read tape measure.
- Must be able to understand and execute instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Must be able to recognize and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Must be able to use company computer systems to view and understand the action required from the dispatch list.
- Must be able to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
- Must be able to read, understand and interpret blueprints and weld procedures.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- AWS Certification preferred.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
- The employee is regularly required to sit or stand; use their hands, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include both close and distant vision.
- Successful passing of vision test (20/30 with or without corrective lenses; if corrective lenses required, corrective lenses must be worn while completing all essential job functions and responsibilities) required every 2 years.
